Djokovic, Thiem through to Australian Open third round; Wawrinka crashes out
Novak Djokovic and Dominic Thiem successfully scaled through the second round of the Australian Open, while Stan Wawrinka got knocked out.
World number one Djokovic overcame a scare to see off American Frances Tiafoe in a four-set encounter that took three hours 30 minutes.
The Serb, who is aiming for his third consecutive Australian Open title and a ninth overall, defeated Tiafoe 6-3 6-7 (3-7) 7-6 (7-2) 6-3.
Thiem had it easier as he cruised past Germany’s Dominik Koepfer 6-4 6-0 6-2 in an hour and 39 minutes.
The last year’s finalist will face Australia’s Nick Kyrgios of France’s Ugo Humbert in the third round.
Swiss Wawrinka exited the competition after a fifth-set tie-break loss to Hungarian Maryon Fucsovics.
The Australian Open is in its third day as the Melbourne event is growing more thrilling despite the coronavirus pandemic.
