EPL: Man City go top after thrashing West Brom; Arsenal seal comeback win at Southampton
Manchester City have assumed top spot in the English Premier League after defeating West Brom in a one-sided clash on Tuesday night.
City, who started the day in second place behind rivals Manchester United, climbed to top spot with a 5-0 victory over Sam Allardyce’s team.
No team in Europe’s top five divisions has conceded as many goals at home as West Brom this season.
Ilkay Gundogan bagged a brace for City, Joao Cancelo, Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling all got into the scoresheet as they top the table for the first time this season.
Defeat leaves 19th-placed West Brom six points adrift of safety going into a massive game against Fulham this Saturday.
Elsewhere, Arsenal pulled off a revenge against Southampton, sealing a 3-1 win few days after losing 1-0 to crash out of the English FA Cup.
The Gunners trailed from the third minute after Stuart Armstrong put the hosts ahead, but turned the game around to clinch a vital win.
Nicolas Pepe started the comeback in the eighth minute as he equalised with a neat finish, before Bukayo Saka scored a wonderful goal in the 39th minute to put Arsenal ahead for the first time in the game.
In the second half, the Mikel Arteta side completed the stunning fightback with a 72nd-minute goal by Alexander Lacazette.
Earlier on Tuesday, Crystal Palace fell 2-3 to West Ham, who climbed to fourth with the victory; while Newcastle United lost 1-2 to visiting Leeds United.
